What is Metamodernism?
Metamodernism is a cultural philosophy emerging in the 21st century that oscillates between modernist sincerity and postmodern irony. Unlike postmodernism’s skepticism and detachment, metamodernism allows for earnest expression while acknowledging its constructed nature. In art, this manifests as works that are simultaneously ironic and sincere, critical yet hopeful. Some see contemporary Surrealism and Pop Surrealism as expressing metamodern sensibilities, combining technical sincerity with awareness of artistic conventions and pop culture references. The concept helps frame how contemporary surrealist practice relates to broader cultural conditions.
