Who is Remedios Varo?
Remedios Varo (1908-1963) was a Spanish-Mexican Surrealist painter known for intricate, mystical paintings featuring elongated figures, alchemical imagery, and fantastical architectures. After fleeing the Spanish Civil War and Nazi-occupied France, Varo settled in Mexico City where she created her most celebrated work. Her paintings depict figures engaged in mysterious rituals, scientific experiments, and spiritual quests within elaborate, dreamlike settings. Varo’s meticulous technique and symbolic vocabulary draw on alchemy, Jungian psychology, and mysticism. Along with Leonora Carrington, she developed a distinctly feminine Surrealist vision exploring transformation, magic, and inner journeys. Her work profoundly influences contemporary Visionary Art and Mystical Art.
