What is Frottage?

Frottage is a Surrealist technique developed by Max Ernst in 1925 that involves placing paper over a textured surface and rubbing with pencil or crayon to transfer the texture. Ernst discovered the technique while staring at a wooden floor, finding that the grain patterns stimulated his imagination and suggested forms he could develop further. The resulting images bypass conscious artistic control, allowing the unconscious to find meaning in random patterns. Ernst compiled frottage drawings into his ‘Histoire Naturelle’ portfolio, showing forests, creatures, and cosmic phenomena emerging from rubbings of wood, leaves, and fabric. The technique relates to automatism in its embrace of chance and unconscious association. Frottage influenced subsequent artists and remains a valuable technique for accessing unexpected imagery.
