What is Figurative Art?
Figurative art depicts recognizable subjects from reality, particularly the human figure, as opposed to abstract or non-representational art. Most Surrealist painting is figurative-artists like Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte depicted recognizable objects and bodies with precise realism. What makes Surrealist figuration distinctive is placing these recognizable elements in impossible situations, illogical combinations, or dreamlike contexts. The tension between realistic figuration and irrational content creates Surrealism’s distinctive power-we recognize what we see, yet it violates our expectations of reality. Contemporary artists across Pop Surrealism, Dark Art, and Visionary Art continue exploring figurative approaches to surreal content.
