What inspired H.R. Giger?

H.R. Giger drew inspiration from multiple sources that shaped his distinctive biomechanical vision. His childhood nightmares and night terrors directly influenced his dark aesthetic, with recurring dreams providing imagery he would later render in painstaking detail. He was profoundly influenced by Surrealist masters, particularly Salvador Dali and the Fantastic Realism of Ernst Fuchs. The writings of H.P. Lovecraft, with their cosmic horror and unknowable entities, provided thematic inspiration. Giger was also fascinated by the occult, ancient mythology, Egyptian art, and the intersection of biology and technology that defined the 20th century. His background studying architecture and industrial design at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich informed his precise, technical approach. These influences combined into his signature style that continues inspiring Dark Art practitioners today.
